»The SHIFTphone 8 demonstrates that water protection and repairability can go hand in hand. As the first modular, repairable smartphone to achieve IP66 dust and high-pressure water resistance, it sets a new industry benchmark for circular design. SHIFT has been combining compelling design with modularity for more than a decade.«

Three questions for Leon von Zepelin, Research & Communication

How did the idea for “SHIFTphone 8” first come about?
The SHIFTphone 8 is the logical next step in the evolution of our earlier models. We began by asking how we could combine ten years of experience with new technologies to create a smartphone that has as little impact on the environment as possible while still meeting user needs. To achieve this, we deepened our focus on modularity and repairability, and took a new approach to water protection.

Were there any breakthrough moments in the course of development? What were the biggest obstacles you faced?
The large number of pre-orders for the SHIFTphone 8 was a highlight and set a new record for our company. Seeing so many people inspired by our idea is a real source of inspiration. One major challenge was to remain true to our modular design while achieving a high IP rating without adhesives. Being the first manufacturer to succeed in this was a special milestone for us.

What are the next steps for your project as you look to the future?
Our next step is to make universal computing a reality, where the smartphone becomes the central device that handles all processing tasks. Other devices such as monitors, smartwatches or tablets will serve only as displays and use far fewer resources. This will create a leaner, more modular ecosystem with less electronic waste and lower material consumption. SHIFTphone 8 marks an important step towards this goal.
