»Until now, specialty papers had largely been excluded from paper recycling — but not at Steinbeis Papier GmbH. Thanks to an innovative processing technique, the company has succeeded in producing labels made entirely from recycled paper that meet the requirements of the Blauer Engel, Germany’s official environmental label, but are also safe for food-related applications. This sets new standards in the recycling of specialty papers.«

Three questions for Veronika Warmers, Head of Marketing and E-Business
How did the idea for “Recycling-Etiketten im Closed Loop” first come about?
Given the shrinking market for graphic papers and increasingly scarce fibre resources, the idea arose during product development to create a wet- and alkali-resistant label paper using material that had previously been non-recyclable. This has allowed us to unlock new sources of raw materials and markets for sustainable recycled labels, and has closed an important gap in the circular economy.
Were there any breakthrough moments in the course of development? What were the biggest obstacles you faced?
The biggest challenge was transferring the idea from the laboratory to an industrial scale. After feasibility studies and technical trials, the successful commissioning of the new processing line was the absolute highlight. At that moment, it was clear to us that our vision of a true circular economy for wet and alkali-resistant labels and other special types of waste paper had become a reality.
What are the next steps for your project as you look to the future?
Our success with wet- and alkali-resistant labels is just the beginning. We’re now looking to roll out this technology to other high-grade graphic papers that still depend on pure virgin fibres. Our aim is to continually advance material recycling and thereby close the loop for an ever-growing range of paper types.
