Winners 2013

The following twelve products, services, concepts and new talents were all granted the 2013 Federal Ecodesign Award. The award ceremony took place on 11th November in the Federal Environment Ministry in Berlin.

Product category

Material goods as well as non-material services that either serve as a substitute for a product or which provide a product service system can be submitted in the Product category. The following seven projects were granted the 2013 Ecodesign Award for products:

Aided by innovative combustion technology and automated bi-metal control, the wood burner achieves combustion values that were previously considered unreachable, and all alongside more straightforward and safe operation. The door closes and locks automatically, while the air inlet and switching logic have self-regulated control for each burning phase. All mechanical parts are accessible and replaceable, and the company’s in-house customer service can be consulted at any time by retailers or customers. The manufacturer guarantees lifetime spare parts availability. Throughout, the design of the fireplace underlines its progressive character: the clean combustion and straightforward operation are matched by light colours and clean lines.

Jury statement:
“The bionic fire wood burner is a big step in the right direction. The values for emissions and efficiency are outstanding, the combustion technology is innovative, and operation is simple. The unit is straightforward to repair and it is durable overall. This is by all means a prize-worthy product.” (Jochen Flasbarth)

Hilti TE-YX Hilti AG

The Hilti TE-YX hammer drill for reinforced concrete is manufactured using cold forming – the only drill of its kind on the market. This approach produces no material waste, thereby considerably reducing the environmental impact. The device is 20–35% lighter than a conventional drill because less steel is required to produce an efficient groove. The drill has a considerably longer service life thanks to the high-grade carbide metal drill head and the unique construction that prevents locking upon contact with iron.

Jury statement:
“The lifespan and product benefits provide a foundation for the innovative manufacturing process of the Hilti TE-YX. In addition, material utilisation has been cut by 30%, which also reduces weight. The product life cycle is completed by a unique function- and performance guarantee that enables the drill to be replaced free of charge.” (Prof. Günter Horntrich)

LifeCycle Tower - intelligente Lösung für nachhaltigen Städtebau Cree GmbH

The interdisciplinary research project LifeCycle Tower has been developed as an alternative to conventional structural systems in building engineering. Compared with conventional systems, the flexible and globally applicable timber hybrid construction system for large-scale buildings offers a variety of benefits for the environment, developers and users: a halving of resource use, high energy efficiency and up to 90% savings in CO2. Following dismantling, the life cycle-oriented design and the utilisation of unmixed materials enables straightforward conversion and reuse. The regional production of system elements reduces transport volume and CO2 emissions.

Jury statement:
“The LifeCycle Tower is a design- and construction method for buildings of up to 30 storeys. To the greatest extent possible, the timber-hybrid construction system of predominantly sustainable wood materials is industrially prefabricated. Concrete is used only partially. The result of this innovative method of construction is a halving of used resources and up to 90% savings in CO2. Fantastic!” (Nicola Stattmann)

Metro-Plattform Inspiro Siemens AG
Design: BMW Group DesignworksUSA, Munich Studio Tom Allemeier

The focal elements in the development of the metro platform were energy efficiency and environmental acceptability all the way from production up to daily operation, as well as almost complete recyclability (ca. 95%). The weight of a six-car train has been reduced by around 18 tonnes through lightweight construction and a weight-optimised chassis. Particular attention has been paid to the utilisation of already recycled secondary materials as well as an inviting interior design.

“The metro platform is characterised reduced material- and energy consumption and good recyclability. Particular added value is generated by increased passenger comfort. There is a growth of awareness around the topic of public transportation, which is promoting a shift from private to public transport.” (Prof. Günter Horntrich)

PYUA – Ecorrect Outerwear Sportsman's Delight GmbH

PYUA is the first functional clothing brand worldwide to manufacture high-quality winter sports clothing from previously recycled or recyclable materials in the so-called Closed-Loop Recycling System. This system reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions and avoids resource waste. Thee fluorocarbon-free fittings set a high standard, and the polyester laminate CLIMALOOP, which is developed specially for impregnation, is pollutant-free. The accompanying repair service contributes to prolonging the service life.

Jury statement:
“Consistently environmentally conscious and intelligent product development, most notably in the fluorocarbon-free fittings, the use of recycled fibres and the recyclability, including a take-back system. Style-conscious, functionally mature, strong colours and with cult status for connoisseurs. The makers know their product and their production chain, and the end result is credible and innovative ecodesign. Respect!” (Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow)

Second Life Rugs – Handgefertigte Upcycling Teppiche
Second Life Rugs Ute Ketelhake

Second Life Rugs are hand-woven soft carpets made from Lana Cotta (pure boiled wool). In the manufacturing of the carpets, production residues from pure virgin wool are knotted together to create unique items. Valuable raw material residues are further processed using an innovative technique before being turned – via upcycling – into a new, high quality and durable product. The carpets are produced in cooperation with social networks, workshops or disadvantaged groups.

Jury statement:
“A well thought-out upcycling production concept that recycles production waste from already spun and dyed virgin wool from controlled biological livestock into hand-made unique carpet items. All this, and in an aesthetically pleasing manner. An innovative approach further processes the valuable raw material residues to create a superior product.” (Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow)

ZAwheel – Elektromobilität der Zukunft Ziehl-Abegg SE

The ZAwheel for commercial vehicles is an electric drive that sits in the middle of the wheel. This wheel hub drive raises efficiency to 90% in contrast to 20 to 30% in an internal combustion engine. Moreover, the lack of gears or differential makes it more efficient than other electric drives. It can be easily incorporated (retrofitted) into existing buses. The high energy savings, the noise- and fine particle reduction as well as CO2- and NO2-free line operation speak for themselves.

Jury statement:
“Among other things, I’m impressed by the finesse of the drive – an electric drive without gearbox and differential, which sits in the centre of the wheel and feeds braking energy back into the system, thereby significantly increasing efficiency compared to an internal combustion engine. Moreover, the fact that the drive can be straightforwardly used in existing buses, thus opening up new possibilities in the use of public transport, is highly persuasive.” (Dr. Ulf Jaeckel)

Service category

The following project was ultimately granted the 2014 German Federal Ecodesign Award:

The SOLARKIOSK is conceived as an independent energy source for rural populations in developing countries. Customers can use the kiosk to recharge their mobile phones, listen to the radio, cool medicines or purchase solar lamps. This does away with the need for harmful kerosene lamps or diesel generators for nighttime illumination. The kiosk can operate for three days after only five hours of sunshine.

Jury statement:
“The Solarkiosk convinces as an overall concept and in its creative realisation. It gives the local population access to energy via a solar energy-based power supply. Furthermore, it provides a business foundation for small local companies and serves as a social meeting point.” (Dr. Dietlinde Quack)

Concept category

Concept studies, pilot projects and prototypes can be submitted in the Concept category. The winning project that convinced the jury and was awarded the Ecodesign Award 2013 for concepts is:

Revolver – Personal Wind Turbine frog design Europe GmbH
Design: frog design Europe GmbH Paul Bradley, Jonas Damon, David Gustafson, Jinseok Hwang, Brian Wasson und Ryan Wickre

Even in the lightest of breezes this wind turbine can produce up to 35 watts – enough power for a laptop, mobile phone and a lamp. The four curved Darrieus turbine blades are opened with a single motion of the hand. Steel pins ensure that the tripod is securely attached to the ground during strong winds. The turbine is as large as an umbrella, meaning that transportation and storage is easy.

“Today, energy self-sufficiency is a requirement in all spheres of life. Following the incorporation of solar cells into textiles or backpacks, the Revolver project now takes up the challenge of portable wind-powered electricity generation. The portable wind turbine for travellers or outdoor enthusiasts is an alternative source of power generation for nature-lovers who are nevertheless unable to do without their tools of civilization and who have high design expectations.” (Werner Aisslinger)

Young Talent category

The Young Talent category is to be understood as a cross-section category for projects from all areas of design. A total of three projects in the Young Talent category went on to win the 2013 Federal Ecodesign Award. The awards in this category also include a cash prize of 1000 euros.

Integrated Urban Morphologies

In recent decades there has been an increase in energy and climate requirements for buildings. Early in the design process, the Integrated Urban Morphologies design program utilises computer-based form generation techniques to model these complex requirements. This enables the planning of buildings that use their shape to respond intelligently to their energetic and climatic conditions. The subsequent algorithm enables the definition of design parameters such as plot area, maximum height and desired number of utilisation units (e.g. apartments or offices), and for the automatic generation of design variations.

Jury statement:
“The project comprises a design program that enables the determination of the best possible arrangement, form, orientation, structure and infrastructure for the building as a function of the climatic conditions and location of a plot of land. This reduces the need for energy and resources in the construction phase as well as in the subsequent operation of the building. It’s a fantastic tool!” (Nicola Stattmann)

Pumpipumpe – ein analoges Sharing System

Pumpipumpe is committed to a conscious approach to consumer goods and to greater social interaction in the neighbourhood. Encouragement should be given to the concept of borrowing and lending those possessions that are otherwise rarely used. This won’t happen on the Internet; instead, stickers on mailboxes – which neighbours pass by every day – is the means of bringing this idea to life. In this way, neighbours can meet up to borrow tools or kitchen appliances, and can thus can be freed from having to own these items. Share more, buy less and thereby help protect the environment – this is the Pumpipumpe principle.

“In a time when everything can be shared online, the Meteor Collectif created a clever idea that allows your neighbors to share their stuff with each other. Smartly illustrated, simple to implement. What more can you ask

Esther Bätschmann
ESMOD BERLIN Internationale Kunsthochschule für Mode

STARTKLAR is a cradle-to-cradle collection for men and women. The style is defined by clear lines and bold colours. All garments are made using certified Cradle-to-Cradle materials and are recyclable without residue, either in a technical or biological cycle. The use of these special materials has necessitated the development of intelligent solutions for interlinings & linings, among challenges. STARTKLAR stands for durable fashion with cuts that allow the items to be stress-resistant whilst retaining their shape. Waste is avoided in both the choice of materials and in the manufacturing process, resulting in products that are of high quality in both style and value.

“The collection is characterised by successful design; it is extremely stylish and authentic. The used materials and resources are advantageous from an environmental perspective, and attention has been paid to social standards.” (Dr. Dietlinde Quack)
